Final Project

Last week when I was supposed to be working on homework and project I could only think of one thing, Thanksgiving. It was only days away and that could only mean one thing, lots of overindulging. When I was thinking about my own experiences and traditions I remembered Black Friday. The one day where people turn into monsters and fight over the hottest toys of the season. I wanted to not only record my morning but also show how ridiculous people can get.

We started out by going to Best Buy to look for a portable hard drive. We thought that because of a 12 AM start time that the lines wouldn’t be nearly as bad as they usually are. We were quite wrong. Instead of lines being better, they were 10 times worse. The line for Best Buy stretched around the plaza and up to Target. I managed to get a picture of the commotion at the front door. To emphasize the long line and the people trying to rush through it I also took a picture of the line as we were walking towards the end.

The next store was Old Navy. My sister was looking for one particular article of clothing. When we were inside she couldn’t even get to the clothes rack, there were too many people standing and competing for the same deal.

Up to this point the morning was a disaster; we hadn’t purchased a single item. We were going over our lists to see if there was anything on our lists that we still might be able to get. We decided to head back to Target and see if the line was still long. One the way there I took a shot of the lit up store lights. The long exposure allowed the signs to blur and creates a feeling of panic and chaos.

Once we got to Target we realized the line was still wrapped around the building. In amazement, we left and went to Kohl’s. I didn’t get the chance to take pictures at Kohl’s but I did over hear a very interesting conversation. I decided to keep a quote and use it for the final piece. I arranged the picture in the order that they happened.

Final Project Brainstorming

For my big idea I choose to go with memory. I am at a very interesting point in my life and I have been finding myself very nostalgic. I am about to graduate and leave Columbus. When I first came to Columbus I was by myself and didn’t really know anyone. I learned to embrace the unknown, venture forward, and make the best of what was given to me at the moment. This way of living has led me to some great and unforgettable experiences. It would me a lot to me if I could capture just a portion of the things I have experienced and the people I have met.

When pursuing the idea of memory I had a couple of different ideas all telling a story about the time that I have spent at OSU. The first thing that came to mind was the story of Kim; how we met, the time we spent together, and the awesomely horrific ending. When thinking about this I also started to think about everyone else, all my friends. I could tell the story of my friends, how I helped them and how they helped me. As I was thinking about my friends I started to think about the ones that didn’t make it. I could do a tribute to not only my fallen friends but also my family. When I was writing my list I stared to look at all the strong feelings that these things contained one thing popped into my mind, Carmen Ohio.

I am going to tell my story at Ohio State and include a little bit of everything. I am limiting myself to stick within the boundaries of OSU and Columbus. I will be relying on pictures that I have collected during my years here at OSU. This could be a problem depending on what pictures I have kept and which is still on facebook.  In addition to making the pictures I would like to combine the music and pictures, I don’t know if it will be a movie or a slide show with music. I really hope the people who see this will know of the things that I have done while at Ohio State. What I want them to feel or understand is the strong passion and the feelings that are tied to this school and it’s people.

MP5: To Flood

My two actions words were flood and shave. I began by finding the definition of the words and the brainstorming ideas. Shaving was immediately the word I wanted to choose. The first thing I thought of was, “No Shave November”. An event I have not yet been able to participate because of an inability to grow facial hair. As my list grew I decided to move onto brainstorming for the other word, flood. Once my lists were complete I realized I had nothing to go with. After some help an old chemistry demonstration popped into my head.

When we were first learning about the bonds between molecules the teacher would put droplets of water on a coin. As a class we would count the number of drops that fit on the coin. I was always amazed how much would fit on the coin and how covalent bonds made it possible.

When it comes to coins I have a very bad habit of picking up every penny, nickel, dime, or quarter that I see. It doesn’t seem like much at the time but I collect the loose change and once a year I cash it in. Usually I end up with enough to buy a video game, the one and only video game that I will allow myself to buy a year.

Because of the reward this odd habit has it has become very dear to me. So, I decided that I would flood the two most common coins that I find, the penny and the dime. Instead of using just plain water I used food coloring. My intention was to create a record on paper of the process that I was using. I dropped the two coins and added food coloring until there was so much that it spilled over the edge. I repeated this process with different colors.
